Cocoa for your colon?
Be sure you have some cocoa to help keep you warm this winter. A new study published in Molecular Nutrition and Food Research determined that cocoa could help prevent intestinal disease including colon cancer caused by chemical substances.
It seems that the flavonoids in cocoa block oxidative stress, and cell-signaling pathways involved in the growth of cancer cells and cancer tumour formation. Cocoa flavonoids may also cause apoptosis or death of cancer cells.
Now that’s some tasty medicine we can all enjoy. Just be sure you choose dark cocoa with at least 70% cacao – and watch the sugar, which could undo all the health benefits.
