Daily health tip #28
Live like you're driving.
So I was stepping out of Starbuck’s today with a rare treat of a non-fat, extra hot, Tazo chai latte in hand, and as I pushed through the door to leave, I automatically looked over my shoulder before I let go to make sure that there was no-one following close behind with hands full trying to catch a free opened door. I certainly didn’t want to be a factor in a coffee catastrophe!
There was no-one coming, and as I let go of the door, I realized that the action of looking behind me before I made a move was very much something I would do if I were driving a car. Suddenly the words “Live like you’re driving” popped into my head – rather melodically – to the tune of Tim McGraw’s hit “Live like you’re dying.”
As I made my way home, I pondered how one might live “like you were driving.” Obviously, you’d want to be sure you considered how every action you take would impact those around you. Stop? Go? Now? Wait? Left? You’re much less likely to hurt those around you – and yourself – when you take everything into consideration before you act. Or speak.
Likewise, you would proceed when the way was clear. This is good for two reasons: one, you won’t proceed when it’s dangerous, and two, the guy behind you will surely let you know the way is clear ALREADY if you take too long in decision-mode, so you won’t go through life missing opportunities.
You would always signal your intention, rather than making hasty decisions because you’re not paying attention or you don’t know where you’re going. Of course, instead of flipping on an indicator light to let others know what you were planning to do, you would, instead, create your goals and dreams and then share them with close friends and family who can help you keep your vision alive.
And you would learn to be patient with someone nearby who either
(A) has nowhere special to go at any particular time when you’re late for a meeting that’s still at least ten minutes away or
(B) is late for a meeting across town when you’ve got no particular place to go.
Finally, you would be sure to maintain your vehicle, including regular check-ups, proper fuel, a balance of rest and exercise, and a wax and polish as required.
Did I miss anything? How else could you live like you were driving? Let’s have some fun with this!
Until tomorrow,
Let’s all walk the talk!
